SpeakOut Traineeship

SpeakOut Traineeship is a 12 month creative industries focussed employment and training program for young people with limited opportunities.

Trainees are employed in an integrated and flexible program that combines nationally accredited training (Certificate III), creative skills development, self-devised projects and work for select clients.

Since SpeakOut's first Traineeship intake in 2002, the program has successfully employed and trained more than 60 young people.

The Traineeship is unique in its structure and levels of success and received national acclaim in 2006 with a Minister's Award for Excellence.

Key program Components

Orientation
A wholistic approach to inducting young people into employment and training practices including:
• organisational overview and induction
• industry visits and presentations
• introduction to TAFE and accredited training
• creative and personal development workshops
• basic training in software and design principles
• team building

Knowledge
Building on the Orientation this component equips Trainees with the tools to communicate and create through the principles and elements of graphic design, sound, motion and multimedia. Practical exercises are embedded within knowledge sessions, followed by projects and activities.

Open for Business
Application of skills developed in the Knowledge program to real world project briefs and clients. Trainees work both autonomously and in teams to design, develop and deliver specific print and multimedia jobs. Trainees also have the opportunity to specialise in a specific interest area.

Professional Development and Self-devised Projects
Trainees can identify, devise and be supported to deliver a contained project that relates to their area of professional interest. Trainees can also access, where appropriate, other professional opportunities such as:
• work placement in SpeakOut or partner organisations
• mentoring
• research

Life Beyond SpeakOut
SpeakOut works with Trainee to identify goals and pathways beyond the traineeship. Various career mapping exercises and workshops are delivered during this period, and intensive assistance is offered to ensure training and career goals are met.
